Saturday, September 3 – In their season opener, Delaware State University defeated Lincoln University 34-0.
The Hornets rallied with a 10-0 halftime lead, scoring a touchdown in the first quarter followed by a field goal in the second. In the second half, the Hornets would score 24 points to finish off Lincoln University.
Tale of Two halves
A slow first half for the Hornets and Lions as both teams punted a combined 9 times. The Hornets were able to score 10 points that half. Thanks to the defense who put on a clinic forcing 8 punts, and forcing 5 turnovers, one including a fumble which put Hornets in position to score in the first half
A second half where the Hornets could do no wrong. Led by quarterback Jared Lewis and running back Marquis Gillis, and a hungry defense, the Hornets were able to score 24 points including a 17-point 4th quarter. The first quarter saw Wade Inge score on an 8-yard run followed by Nathan Wilson’s field goal. The third quarter followed with a 1-yard touchdown run by Thomas Bertrand-Hudon. The Hornets huge fourth quarter started with a 58-yard touchdown throw from Jared Lewis to Devin Curry, which was followed by a 35-yard Wilson field goal and a 17 Yard score from C.J Henry.
Slow Day for Lincoln
This game was the first game of the season for Lincoln University and was it a tough one. The Lions went four quarters without putting up a score and giving up 5 turnovers, which included 4 fumbles. Lions quarterback Isaiah Freeman threw for 130 yards on 12 of 19 attempts, but was unable to get his team into the end zone.
