Over this past Labor Day weekend, the cookouts and parties weren’t the only place to be. DSU celebrated their hall of fame and champions weekend and kicked off the start of their 2021 season vs Bowie State University.
This was a highly anticipated game since this was the first home game since Covid-19 forced all of us into quarantine. The game started off very quickly as DSU football team went up 19-0 in the first quarter. Offensive lineman,Matthew Derks, said “everything that we practiced offensively leading up to the game worked” and “we were very comfortable and loose during the pregame routines.”
At half time the score was 26-3, but Bowie State had a different game plan coming out in the third half and put up 14 points and held DSU football team to only 6. DSU defense is what helped seal the game and secure the win for DSU.
The hornets forced 5 interceptions, one of them was returned for a touchdown by Esaias Guthrie and a fumble forced by defensive back Charles Peeler. Offensive lineman Matthew Derks said, “when Esaias caught the interception and returned it for a touchdown, I knew the game was sealed.” Defensive back ,Charles Peeler, said “Defensively we had 6 takeaways, so I felt like we had a great game”
The Hornets played an unforgettable home opener and are preparing for their next game vs George Town on the 11th of September at Alumni Stadium/Dover Del.
