Hornets win baseball series

On Saturday March 30ththe Delaware state baseball team was able to beat the university of Maryland Eastern shore baseball team in a riveting game that ended with a score of 6-2.

The game was close as the hornets were tied with the hawks 2-2 until the hornets finally broke out for 4 runs in the 8thinning.

With this win the hornets have gotten their first conference series win of the season and improves them to 8-15 on the year and 3-5 in conference play. The Hornets indeed improved their record after finishing the sweep on Sunday March 31st.

Key Moments  

  • To begin the inning  Tommy Jordan was able to draw a walk which then  lead off the inning and then John Weglarz was able to come through with a huge single to put runners at second and first.
  • Then Miguel Rivera was able to reach on a bunt single which then led to Cole Garey being hit by a pitch to load the bases. The next batter, Jared Gillis singled to center, scoring Jordan and Weglarz to give the Hornets a 3-2 lead Rich Rountree followed with a single to load the bases again.
  • The bases were still loaded with two outs when pinch hitter Adrian hill singled to right to score Gillis and Garey,  stretching the lead to 5-2.
  • Mark Herron put the icing on the cake as he then singled in Rountree giving the Hornets’ their fifth run of the inning.

 Key Performances

Senior RHP Sean Mcgrath pitched extremely well as he only allowed 2 runs while striking out 7 through 6 2/3 innings. Freshman RHP Robert Shorts finished the game in relief coming in with the bases loaded and getting the hawk hitter to ground out to Jared Gillis.

 Looking Forward

The hornets do not have any mid week games coming up this week, but will look forward to next weekend when they take on the Norfolk State Spartans, a team that swept them just two weeks ago.
