The National Pan-Hellenic Council’s annual Step Show took place on October 25th, 2018. This highly anticipated event, called Who Runs the Yard?, took place in the Memorial Hall Gymnasium on DSU’s campus. If you were in attendance, you could feel massive amounts of energy in the room. Everyone was anxious to find out which sorority and fraternity would be awarded the trophy and giant check in the amount of $1,000.
This year’s competition was especially intriguing due to the many different performances throughout the course of the night. In addition to some of the Divine 9 organizations in competition, there were showcases from other performance organizations on campus such as, Caribbean Student Association (CSA), iStep Step Team, and Hidden Vanity Dance Team.
The step performances from each organization required a timed show of 12 minutes. There was one representative from each D9 organization as well as a student leader judge, to prevent bias decisions. Some of the qualities that the judges were looking for were creativity, difficulty, precision, energy, and clarity.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated run on stage to celebrate their victory
A memorable moment for all the shows were the tributes to other organizations. Including popular song choices in the show and the tributes usually received the most crowd engagement.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated steppers pose with winning trophy
So who really runs the yard? Both, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. were awarded their winning trophies and checks for a job well done. This was the sorority’s return of victory since 2014, while the winning fraternity is on a winning streak after claiming the title 5 years in a row.
Everyone had great sportsmanship throughout the night. There was no negative energy in the atmosphere. Instead, people were excited while having a great time. How could you not? There was music provided by DJ Breaz and hosting by @localceleb_geo. Overall, this step show proved that DSU is always sure to put on a great homecoming event!
