Are College Students really smarter than a 5th Grader? That was the question of the night, Friday September 7, 2018, as 5 contestants participated in the popular game: ‘Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?’ with a cash prize for the winner.
The event was hosted by Mr. Delaware State University, Raphael Jason-Morgan. This was his first event this school year as Mr. DSU.
The contestants were asked a range of 1st to 5th grade questions, with categories like Astrology, World Geography and Measurements. The contestants had 60 seconds to answer the question. If answered correctly they had points added to their score. “Which of the following historical documents was the last to be ratified?” was one of many questions.
The audience was urged to participate and engage in the game, as Mr. DSU called out to the crowd to ask for the next category. He asked for drumrolls as he called out the correct answer. He also asked the audience if they knew some of the answers to the questions. There was even a friendly argument about one of the answers that the audience got involved. Is a Dam and a Reservoir the same? That’s was the argument of the night.
The event had a great turnout. Students saw the flyers on social media or “Heard about it from a friend.” said Karla, a DSU student. Mr. DSU wanted this to be his first event of the year because “School is very stressful. All year long students are going to be going up and down with emotions… So, I felt that we should have a carefree type of event with a little bit of education to the side just to uplift spirits.” He says.
Mr. DSU says, “I don’t know if we’ll have events pertaining to something like this so soon… We have other programs that are more on the student aspect and more on the professional aspect compared to ‘Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?’ but definitely stay tuned it’s going to be a fun year.”
