Alumni Double-Header Basketball for Breast Cancer Awareness

By Elijah Miles

Memorial Hall gymnasium will be the place to be on February 17th! Delaware State University is hosting their alumni basketball double header. Both of the games are also a tribute to breast cancer awareness.

The purpose of the alumni game is to celebrate those who have graduated from this wonderful university by giving them a glimpse of their past experiences through today’s student body. Having a gym filled with former as well as current Hornets, will amplify the amount of enthusiasm in the bleachers, as well as on the court.

In the course of their life time, 1 in 8 U.S. women are likely to develop breast cancer. The pink ribbon is the official symbol to represent breast cancer awareness. People wear pink articles of clothing to games or events dedicated to showing support for those fighting against the disease.

By wearing the same color for the same reason, there is a showing of togetherness. Unifying people gives hope because it lets those affected by breast cancer know that they are not the only ones that are rooting for health.

As of February 13th, the women’s basketball team are the 11th seed in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. On Saturday, they will be facing the 12th seed, Florida A&M. Both teams have the same conference record, so the victor of this matchup will become the higher seed.

Immediately after the women’s game, the men’s basketball team will be looking for their first conference win in their battle against Florida A&M. Defeating them would snap their 20-game losing streak, and give them a chance to make a late-season run and become a team to look out for during the MEAC tournament in March.

The Lady Hornets tip off the double header at 2p.m., this Saturday.  Students can reserve their tickets online through the website designed for them to get tickets assigned to their student IDs. Other tickets can be purchased at the door when entering Memorial Hall Gymnasium.
