Homecoming Week at DSU is almost at a close, but the school cannot go out without a bang without the highly anticipated step show.
Who Really Runs This Yard? Set the tone and the standard for the intense step show. Laughs, gossip, and even tension filled Memorial Hall Gymnasium as students, faculty and the Diving 9 filled seating.
The show opened up with the Oyoto Dancers from the African Student Association (ASA). Their dances brought excitement to the crowd as they then prepared for the Greeks to perform.
Performing in founding order, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated first. The theme for their show was Presidential Kampaign. The ladies stunned the crowd with their stunts, especially making a 1908 with their bodies.
After a brief intermission, the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated performed under the theme of Takers. Their opening video included the “kidnapping” of one of their sisters by other sororities.
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated performed next, with You Got Served as their theme. The crowd exploded with excitement and dancing, as they reminisced on the hit 2004 movie.
Another brief intermission occurred as dance team Hidden Vanity performed. Their rendition of The Wiz was done brilliantly, and the dance moves were sharp and on point. HV received a roaring applause from the audience, leading us into Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated. The ladies put on a show to remember, as their theme was based off a classic movie, Mean Girls.
Finally, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Incorporated closed out the show, with a Harlem Globetrotters theme. Their intro video provided some comedic relief to the step show, as everyone (performers and students) were anxious and nervous about the results.
The crowd jammed to throwback tunes as the judges deliberated. At exactly 11:14 pm, the host announced the two winners.
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated won for the fraternities, placing the Sigma’s on a three year winning streak. Sister sorority Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated won for the sororities, placing the Zeta’s on a two year winning streak.
Jasmine Walker, a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. stated “My sisters and I won because we earned it! When you work hard, you win. Period!”
Sophomore attendee Keshawn Ross commented and said “The step show was live, and had the crowd really hype. This was my first show I attended and I’m glad I did. It was all fun but serious competition.”
While no member from Phi Beta Sigma commented, they shared their win all over social media accounts.
Congratulation to all the Sororities and Fraternities who participated in the step show! The real reward is the hard work and dedication each person put into making this step show possible.
