A Blast From the Past: DSUnity

by: Koya Perez

What do you get when you mix the smooth R&B of the 90s, the fierce hip-hop of the early 2000s, and all of DSU students organizations? You get a taste of DSUnity.

DSUnity is an annual entertainment show that displays the talents of all DSU student organizations. This year’s theme for DSUnity was “Back to DSUnity”, a play on the Back to the Future movie franchise.

A praise dance to P. Diddy’s “I’ll Be Missing You” to honor our fallen hornets was easily the most memorable moment of the DSUnity show. In the tribute, Dymond Dantzler, Thalya Crawford, Terrance Aeriel were honored and remembered.

Other performances included Spoken Word Artist United (SWAU) having a rap battle, in which members performed as different 1990s and 2000s hip hop and R&B artist. DSU cheerleaders put on a rendition of the cheer-off scene in Bring It On, a classic early 2000s movie that everyone loves to laugh at. Limitless Fashion Club and 1Entity modeling troupes strutted around the gym in a face off, as well as dance teams Hidden Vanity and iStep battling each other. Greek organizations Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta, Iota Phi Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho and Alpha Kappa Alpha also all performed a stroll, in unison. The Divine 9 definitely showed out that evening!

As a surprise to the campus, the new Spring 2016 line of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated was also in attendance, as their unveiling to the campus.

Overall, DSUnity had one purpose, and the show did just that. As DSU closes out the school year, the student body is ending on a positive note.
