Hornets Slide by Coppin State

By: Rick K. Jackson

This past weekend the DSU men’s baseball team pulled off a nail biting MEAC conference win over Coppin State.

The Hornets improved their overall record to 9-26 with a 10-9 win over the Eagles.

Despite the team’s less than impressive overall record, the Hornets are currently the number three team in the entire MEAC division just behind Florida A&M who is number one and Norfolk State at number two.

DSU was able to capitalize off of costly mistakes by Coppin State pitcher as Chris Pazarella and Sam Barber were both walked while Jacob Bartlett was hit by a pitch. This set up Devi Beverly beautifully, as he was able to get a single RBI. This sparked the scoring streak, as the Hornets scored 5 unanswered runs.

But Coppin State would not make this victory for the Hornets an easy one. Coppin State would score 2 runs in the third inning off of DSU pitcher Lane DeLeon.  Coppin State continued to fight back scoring 4 runs in the fifth inning.

Hornet fans sat in the bleachers feeling uneasy as they watched their team squander a 6-0 lead.  The Eagles eventually took the lead 7-6 on a two-out single by Jamar Criss off Hornet reliever Terry Godfrey in the sixth. DSU went on to regain the lead as Jake Bartlett was walked with the bases loaded. DSU went up 9-7.

Travis Dill of DSU closed the game out as he pitched two scoreless innings.

Darnel Maisonet drove in the winning run in DSU’s 10-9 victory of Coppin State.

DSU will face a tough challenge as they will take on Rutgers University today at 3pm in New Brunswick N.J.
