Every college student, regardless of the major, should consider an internship experience. For most students, landing an internship may seem like a difficult task. But these few tips may help make the process easier and provide a better chance of landing that dream career building experience.

1.) GET EXPERIENCE

Although the internship is designed to help you gain experience in the field, employers want interns who already have work experience. This makes the intern better qualified for the position. Having volunteer, work , prior internships, or even school activity experience shows employers that you have a good work ethic and interest in their industry. These experiences give students a better chance at snagging that internship as opposed to someone with little or no experience.

2.) DO YOUR RESEARCH

Prior to applying for any job or internship, first research the company. This will give you a better understanding of the company’s goals, what is expected of interns and whether the industry is the right fit for you. Research also comes in handy during interviews because employers want to see what you know about their company.

3.) PERFECT YOUR RESUME AND COVER LETTER

A well structured resume and cover letter helps your chances of landing the internship. Make sure that the resume is easy to read and accurately pinpoints your skills, abilities and related work experiences. While writing your cover letter, avoid generic phrases such as “I am very qualified for the position” or “I am dedicated and hardworking” and instead explain to the employer what  makes you the best person for the position. Focus on your accomplishments.

4.) BE PREPARED FOR YOUR INTERVIEW

The most important part of the entire application process is the interview. Once your application has been accepted and reviewed, employers may contact you to conduct a formal interview. Remember to prepare by practicing responses to interview questions.  To make a lasting first impression, students should be well groomed and professionally dressed. Students should also prepare a portfolio of exceptional work samples.

5.) FOLLOW UP!!

No matter how well the interview goes, be sure to contact the employer within  24 hours after the interview to thank them for the opportunity. This well-written email should be brief. This extra effort shows employers that you are serious about your position with their company and usually generates a quick response.
